The cash option was worth $997 million. The jackpot was eventually claimed in February 2023 by Edwin Castro, who said he was ‘shocked and ecstatic’. He said he wanted to remain private so turned down media opportunities to speak more about his big win.

A lucky lottery player in Florida won the record Mega Millions jackpot on August 8, 2023. The jackpot-winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Publix grocery store in Neptune Beach. Before the big win, there had been 31 straight drawings since the last time someone won the game’s jackpot on April 18, 2023. That enabled the prize to steadily grow to be the third-largest ever in U.S. history.
